His road to recovery leads straight to Lake Nokomis

Shad Ireland found strength when he was at his weakest. Down to only 75 lbs. and his lungs filling with fluid after a failed kidney transplant, he made a life-changing decision: He was going to turn all his obstacles into achievements and focus on the positives.

During a 13-month recovery at home to regain his strength, Shad became determined that he’d do more than live a normal life again; he would actually compete in an Ironman triathlon.

His first step was to register for the Life Time Fitness Triathlon training program. “They were able to take me from a 14-minute mile to an eight-minute mile in six weeks.” And from there Shad, as they say, was off and running.

How many triathlons have you participated in? One so far, July 25, 2004, in Lake Placid, NY. But, I will be competing in the Florida Half Ironman Triathlon at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fl in May and the Eagle Man Ironman Triathlon in Cambridge, MD in June. After the Life Time Fitness event, I plan on competing in the Vineman Half Ironman Triathlon in Sonoma County, California at the end of July and then competing in the first-ever Ironman competition in the United Kingdom in August.

Why are you participating in the Life Time Fitness Triathlon? This gives me a chance to compete before my family and friends and against some of the Olympic triathletes in my home state.

How did you start doing triathlons? In 1993, I was recovering from a rejected kidney transplant. I weighed 75 lbs, down from about 145 lbs. I saw an Ironman competition on television and I made a promise to myself that I would complete an Ironman triathlon. So for me, completing an Ironman is a fulfilling a promise I made to myself. I became the first dialysis patient to compete in and complete and Ironman Triathlon when I finished the Lake Placid event last July.

What are your goals for this year? I want to qualify for the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

How have you been training?
I train about 40 hours a week. Prior to completing my first triathlon, I had never ran marathon, or biked or swam competitively. I signed up for the Life Time Fitness triathlon training program with Jared Berg to help me prepare. He was able to help me with my running form and which helped me go from a 14 minutes mile down to an eight-minutes mile. I am still working with Jared along with Dan Cohen for this season, plus I am working with Ramon Villanueva, who is my personal trainer.
