Bio
When Shad Ireland was diagnosed with kidney disease at the age of 10, he began a new phase of  life that revolved around hospitals and dialysis treatments.  This had a profound effect on his mental attitude and for many years, he seemed determined to live hard and die young.  Then, a chance glimpse of a race on television caught his interest, and he promised himself that someday he would compete in a triathlon.

This would mean swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running a marathon (26.2 miles).  This race is a challenge for a healthy person.  For someone with renal disease, it seemed unthinkable.

Shad Ireland completed his first Ironman triathlon in 2004 at the age of 31 – the first dialysis patient to ever do so.  In meeting this goal, he proved that renal disease may have shut down his kidneys, but not his faith in his ability to meet tough challenges head on and persevere.   Shad still competes and is currently training for his next triathlon while taking dialysis treatments and managing the Shad Ireland Foundation.  He currently lives in Rosemount, Minnesota.
